Lutezia Forged Dinner Knife Set (Set of 6) - 26 cm Length - Handcrafted in Italy - Pewter & Stainless Steel
The gorgeous Lutezia Forged Dinner Knife, handcrafted by Italian craftsmen by fusing the finest Brescian pewter and stainless steel, is both strong and ergonomic.
The dinner knife is traditionally the largest of a table setting, and this forged version, at 26 cm, is perfect for cutting and manipulating prepared and cooked food with efficiency, as well as having plate appeal.
The origin of the design of the modern dinner knife, with its distinctive blunt and rounded end, is attributed to Cardinal Richelieu in the mid-17th Century, who was so disgusted at the unsavoury habit of Chancellor Segieur picking his teeth with a pointed knife after a meal, that he ordered the blades of his dinnerware to be ground down and rounded off. Such was the Cardinal’s influence that soon everyone was using rounded-off cutlery knives.
The Lutezia range of flatware and serving ware is, however, inspired by ancient Rome, in fact Lutezia is the Roman name for Paris. The pewter handles take the form of double or bow-shaped balusters, a design that features prominently in Roman silverware, such as handmirrors, spoons, forceps and other utensils from the 2nd Century BC, as well as within architecture, where marble columns and bas-reliefs were carved as balusters. There are further Roman touches to the handles, including the anthemia or palmette-styled decorated terminals or handle tips, as well as fluted frieze-style decorated handle necks; both very popular styles in Roman art and architecture. The classic style of the cutlery, with its exquisite and elegant design, adds sophistication to any table setting, formal or informal.
Sold in sets of six, this knife complements a full range of flatware available in Cosi Tabellini's popular Lutezia range.
The pewter handles of Lutezia cutlery are made using a special technique: the molten pewter is directly cast onto the steel tips of the cutlery; this process forms what is really a single element in which the "hardness" of the steel discreetly dissolves into the "soft" surface of the pewter handle, more suitable for contact with the hands.
