Candle snuffers were originally developed to remove the “candle snuffs”, the excess sooty threads of twisted flax, cotton or hemp, that were used on early tallow candles made from fat, later candle wax. If these weren’t tended to, the candle could get too hot, using up too much candle fat or wax, dripping wastefully down the sides, known as guttering. The original snuffers were like scissors or nippers and used to clip the wick; with skill this could be done without extinguishing the flame.
Designs for snuffers included scissors with a box to capture the “snuffs” – the clipped threads that were trimmed off; these designs were known as snuffer boxes or box snuffers.
With the development of braided thread for wicks in the 19th Century, modern wicks are burnt, requiring less “snuff’ to be trimmed; nevertheless, the classic Licinio pewter candle snuffer box is perfect for tidying up those used candles by removing the excess charred, sooty wick, but also improving the longevity of the candle if the wick has become too long after tilting the candle whilst moving it around.
