The tureen is a respected part of a modern dinner service, however, the golden age of the tureen can be said to have been during the reign of Louis XIV, when the dinner table, which used to contain every dish at once, was refashioned so that each course was presented with an air of ceremony. The soup tureen on its serving platter provided the opening ceremony, and the tureen was developed from a practical covered serving vessel into one of the most richly ornamented centrepieces of the formal apparatus of dining.
