Candles can make a cosy evening at home, even more so, the gentle flicker of the flame can soothe you; yet safety is paramount, even when you are relaxed and ready for bed, and the candles need to be extinguished.
Candle snuffers were originally developed to remove the “candle snuffs”, the excess sooty threads of twisted flax, cotton or hemp, that were used on early tallow candles made from fat.
The term ‘snuffer’ has extended over the years to include extinguishers, which are placed over the candle to stop the air from supplying the flame, putting it out safely, but leaving the wick intact. These extinguishers can be any length, from very short ones, to very long ones used for putting out hard-to-reach and tall pillar candles, often used in stately homes and churches.
