As an evolution of the ritual of afternoon tea, in late Victorian times, there was a trend to display cakes at the table, elevating them upon a stem, so that they could be easily seen, promoting them above all the other food on the table, encouraging one to aspire to one's dessert.
The central handle allows ease of carriage, great for passing around the table, and the delicate braided engraving detail around the edge gives this substantial centrepiece a subtle decoration making it special, yet not too fussy, leaving the drama to the cakes it is displaying. The Double-decker stands unscrews for easy assembly and storage, but it is so pretty, it is a shame to hide it away...
