There are a handful of theories surrounding the origination of the term ‘Highball’ and the subsequent genre of drinks. Some say it refers to the time of day that the drink is consumed – in the afternoon, while the sun, or "ball" is "high” in the sky, as opposed to cocktails in the evening. Others link it to several origins connected to traditional North American railroad terminology. Another suggestion is simply that the glass is tall or "high" and that the type of drink usually served was a "ball" of whiskey, as the spirit is seen as a ‘ball of fire’, especially true in Ireland, where a ‘ball of malt’ was a standard drink order in the 19th Century Dublin.
The golden era of the original Highball seemed to be the post-war years until the 1950s; after prohibition there were not many ‘aged’ spirits to be savoured, so younger spirits were spruced up with carbonated mixers, such as soda, ginger ale and the like, in a highball format.
