Coasters have been used since the 17th Century, although they were known by other names at that time, including ‘bottle stand’, ‘bottle plate’ and ‘bottle slide’, but it wasn’t really until the 18th Century that they became an important dining accessory to protect the dining table. By the late 18th Century, coasters had tall sides styled with attractive designs, including geometric patterns and scrolls; some were inscribed with a crest.
The term ‘coaster’, according to the author of ‘Old English Wine Coasters’ – G. Bernard Hughes – first appeared in 1887, and was derived from the 18th Century custom after finishing dinner of removing the table cloth, so the polished table surface could be admired, and ‘coasting’ (or sliding) a bottle of port around the table could take place. Baize was added to the bottom of the coaster to enable sliding more easily.
