This striking bowl is in the style of a traditional tastevin wine tasting dish - shallow, with a ring handle, for swirling and sipping.

Wine tasting has been practiced ever since humankind has produced wine in order to gauge quality, and allow the practice of wine-making to progress and improve, however, ever since the 1300s, a more established methodology has evolved in order to evaluate the quality of a wine. Sommeliers, and other professional tasters, such as wine buyers, have created formalised techniques and an established terminology to evaluate and describe the characteristics of a wine.

There are five key ways to 'taste' wine: see, swirl, smell, sip and savour in order to appreciate the colour, aroma, taste and aftertaste, which enables one to explain the properties of the wine; its clarity, character, complexity, suitable drinking occasion and potential for aging and storage.

Any recreational wine-drinker may touch upon some aspects of this sensory examination whilst sipping a glass in a kitchen, around a dining table or relaxing on a sofa, however, this analysis need not be formal, but rather a personal reflection and appreciation, based on some level general knowledge of wine types to aid discernment. Ultimately, personal taste should dictate above perceived quality and prestige.

It has to be agreed, there is nothing better than enjoying an expensive bottle of wine among friends and family to mark a special occasion, or to simply celebrate the moment of togetherness, yet if a £6 bottle of Chianti hits the spot, beyond an expensive recommendation read about in a magazine, simply sip, savour and enjoy...

Of course, this dish is not restricted to wine tasting, it is useful as an individual bowl for snacks and nibbles, and looks great either stand alone or within the Lugana set of three. The three dishes look great hanging on hooks on a kitchen dresser, wall or shelf.
