Art Nouveau-Style Andrea Doria Bottle Holder - 29 cm x 18 cm - Handcrafted in Italy - Pewter/Britannia Metal
Art Nouveau-style Andrea Doria bottle holder, in a footed basket style, with classical and sumptuous floral detailing and a florid and fluid handle, all from handcrafted Italian pewter.
Wine experts agree that the ideal storage orientation for wine bottles is at a slight angle, rather than completely horizontal. A slight angle means that the cork remains in partial contact with the wine in order not to dry out (which is what happens if you store a bottle in an upright position), but also the angle keeps the air bubble formed by a wine's 'ullage' (the space remaining between the wine and the cork when filled) at the top of the bottle. Keeping the air bubble at the top of the bottle allows for a more gradual oxidation and maturation process as the expansion of the gas, during inevitable temperature fluctuations (unless you have a state of the art temperature controlled wine cellar!), will diffuse through the cork and not through the wine. When the wine is kept horizontally the air bubble is lower down the bottle, so when oxygen is re-introduced into the bottle during changes in temperature, it is in direct contact with the wine which can react with it and spoil it.
