Brixia Table Clock - 16 cm Height - Handcrafted in Italy - Pewter
Encased within romantic Italian handcrafted pewter, philosophically engraved on the outer case, this classic table clock, with an efficient German movement, is an object of useful beauty.
It looks striking, yet at the same time measured and solid, upon a shelf, table, desk or mantel, and carries an ancient uplifting message on the back plate cover...
... reminding us all that after life's dark moments, lighter times will come - a contemporary version could be...
"it' s just a moment, this time will pass..."
...to quote Evans & Hewson (2001), within popular culture.
The history of clocks is part of the history of the measurement of time, of the various methods and instruments devised for this purpose: sundials, igneous clocks, water clocks, hourglasses, clepsammias and astrolabes. Mechanical clocks appeared after the others but rapidly replaced them; though research has been carried out to find clues as to where and when the mechanical clock was invented, no conclusive elements have been found, although most scholars agree they were invented in the second or the third quarter of the thirteenth century.
The carrying handle on the top of the Brixia Pewter Table Clock is reflective of the 17th and 18th Century style of clocks, which required a handle for practical reasons, as they need to be carried downstairs during the day, and upstairs at night, because they were expensive items and households could generally only afford one clock per household, and hence needed to be transportable.
