Lecce Mushroom Bowl - 23 cm x 18 cm - Handcrafted in Italy - Pewter
As featured in the film Ferdinando and Carolina, this uniquely shaped pewter bowl, handcrafted by specialist pewter craftsmen in a family run workshop in Northern Italy, is extremely attractive. The pewter is 'aged' cleverly to enhance the warmth of the surface patina so that it emits a softly metallic hue.
This large and unusually shaped bowl is the perfect vessel for serving almost anything, from bread, to fruit, to, of course, mushrooms. Fill this bowl with a mycological miscellania: firm white mushrooms, cousin chestnut creminis, pungent wrinkly chanterelles, delicate velvety oysters, powerful portly portobellos and exotic umbrella shitakes; all easily sourced in greengrocers, supermarkets and specialist retailers. Or what about foraging for mushrooms yourself, keep it simple, search for the big-daddy; the field mushroom...
What could be better? A bright autumnal morning, before breakfast, criss-crossing a patchwork of fields, eyes down, the only sound being the swish of glistening wellies through long lush grass, wet with dew, and sighs of disappointment and exasperation, until someone excitedly exclaims - mushroom!
A field mushoom in fact, and a huge one. The rounded pale softness of the cap, flattened with maturity, starkly contrasted against the dark blades of grass, and then, when carefully picked and turned over, revealing hundreds and thousands of brown velvet corduroy gills; a true natural work of art. Carefully placed in the basket, to enable spores to escape and perpetuate this natural larder, and quickly added to, hopefully, by its siblings dotted nearby, maybe in what is whimsically known as a 'fairy ring', and then back home - for breakfast!
Butter and garlic in a frying pan, spoils re-examined, finders re-congratulated, ends trimmed and brushed clean, then simply placed into the pan, now moist and fragrant with the melted butter, fizzing slightly, and wait, as the mushrooms noisily cook, quickly softening and transforming, into moist, oozy black, glistening spheres of utter culinary delight, perfect on top of a thick slice of toast!
And if you have been particularly successful on your fungi foray, keep the left-overs of your forage beautifully displayed in the Lecce Mushroom Bowl, ready for the next meal...
