Mantel clocks were originally developed in France in the mid-18th Century, and were differentiated from earlier chamber clocks, as they didn’t include carrying handles. Due to their small size, they were originally intended for placing on a mantel above the fireplace or on a shelf – they were also called shelf clocks. Today, mantel clocks no longer have to be kept on a shelf or mantel, and the Luna Mantel Clock would look equally attractive on a bedside table or desk, as it would on a mantelpiece or shelf.
