Fantasy creatures feature prominently in Norse mythology, including serpents, snakes and dragons; the latter often becoming confused with snakes. One of the most terrifying of all the snakes being the giant beast Jörmungandr, also known as the Midgard serpent or snake, which was an evil serpent that encircled the world underneath the oceans, and is often seen in decorations with its tail in its mouth. The serpent’s eternal enemy was the thundergod Thor.
Beer and ale drinking was a popular past-time in the Viking Age, with ale (öl in Old Norse) and beer (or björr) coming from malted barley, mixed with hops and sometimes juniper branches and berries and other herbal extracts, or gruits. The drinking of alcohol was particularly important to religious festivals and several rituals associated with drinking developed, including offering toasts, or fulls, for victories.
Viking drinking vessels ranged from wooden tankards for the poor, to elaborate metal-rimmed drinking horns for the rich. The Vikings certainly made use of pewter in making a wide variety of objects, and many stone carved moulds have been uncovered made from soft slate and soapstone.
The Norvegia viking style pewter tankard, with its simple straight, tapered sides, and its serpentine handle, would make an ideal gift for beer lovers and 'Vikings' fans, it's the perfect vessel for toasting in true Viking style. Skål!
