This striking bowl is in the style of the French traditional design - the porringer.
A porringer is a shallow bowl; the form originating from the medieval period in Europe and was traditionally made of wood, ceramic, pewter, cast iron and silver. Porringers had flat, horizontal handles. Colonial porringers tended to have one handle, whereas European ones tended to have two handles on opposite sides, on which the owner's initials were sometimes engraved.
The beauty and interest lies of the porringer is in the handle. The variously pierced designs of the handles reflect much of the silver art of the times.
